Pulitzer Prize winning Atwood Chair reviews Hearst Submission Process
(10/04/2009)
Former Atwood Chair Gary Cohn returned to the Department of Journalism and Public Communications
to rally students to submit quality work for national awards, especially the Hearst Journalism Foundation awards. Cohn reviewed the current submission policies, award deadlines, and the work of past award winners.
“I really wanted to generate some interest
in the awards, and to be another voice motivating students to submit their
work” Cohn said. "Stories we may take as common place, readers from
outside (Alaska) find unusual and interesting.”
Cohn recently spent time analyzing past award-winning stories in all
categories and developed a report to which he believed would help students
become more competitive in the awards competition. Cohn went on to
describe the competition, how the first round selects finalists and how
those finalist compete in San Fransisco for a $5,000 scholarship.

This brown bag lunch features snap-shots of Peter's work from 1999 until present as he evolved his drawing technique using computers while combating Parkinson's disease. While at the Anchorage Daily News, he also created and oversaw a local interactive political cartoon caption contest for which he drew one cartoon a week that readers completed by submitting captions. Peter is now freelancing and working on his many cartooning and animation projects at his FrozenGrin Blog. (http://frozengrin.blogspot.com/).

Fairclough at Brown Bag Lunch
(02/23/2009)
Alaska State Representative Anna Fairclough (R-Eagle River) met with students Thursday to discuss comments she made regarding UA's political opinions. Fairclough was recently criticized for implying during a legislative finance committee meeting that the University system was anti-development. Addressing UAA, Fairclough said that the comments were verbatim, but taken out of context. During the meeting she said she supports the university and the individual voices within it.
